આખરે

ઘરના બે કટકા કર્યા,
એક ઉપર અને એક નીચે.
ઉપર જે જાય તે નીચે થઈને જ જાય.
પણ કોઈએ કોઈની સાથે આંખ મેળવવાની નહીં.
કદાચ…..!
છરી લઈને આંગળીના બે સરખા ભાગ કર્યા
તોય કોઈને સંતોષ ન જ થયો.
એક થાળી અને એક વાટકી માટે
મન રાક્ષસ થઈને બેઠાં.
કાશ્મીરનો એક જર્જરિત ગાલીચો – દાદાના વખતનો,
તેના પણ કહેઃ બે ભાગ કરો.
ભોળાનાથના મંદિર માટે કોઈનો ખાસ આગ્રહ નહીં.
પણ ચાંદીના નન્દી માટેની બૂમાબૂમ છેક નાકા સુધી મહોંચી ગઈ
છોકરાંઓનાં રમકડાં પણ સરખે ભાગે વહેંચી લીધાં.
ને ફરી શરુ થઈ
નવા ઘરની રમત…..
કાશ્મીરના ગાલીચાના કટકા પર!

Upshot 

Divided the house into two.
One upstairs, the other downstairs.
Any one ascending must needs
pass through the lower half;
but eyes should not meet –
just in case….!

Cut the finger into equal halves with a knife.
Still nobody felt satisfied at all.
People turned demonic over possessing
one thali* and one vataki**.

There was a frayed Kashmir carpet – of Grandpa’s time.
They demanded ‘Cut this into two’.
Nobody bothered too much
about the Bholanath shrine*.
But the shouting over the silver Nandi****
reached the lane’s end.

Children’s toys too
were shared equally.
And the game in the new home began again…  
over the Kashmir carpet’s portion!
